Ethernet Direct Cable Conection
Hiya guys.
Right, i have 2 PCs one at home and the other that i use at University. I have some large files that i want to transfer from my desktop to my laptop. they wont fit on DVD or any other removable media divice. Both computers have Ethernet ports and i have an ethernet cable. When i was at university one of my fellow students transfered files directly between computers by hooking them up with a ethernet cable and using an FTP client and the IP address of the target computer. Ive tryed this and cant get it to work at all. ive also tryed using the Direct Cable Conection incorporated in XP with no success. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks |

Try it with a crossover cable not just a patch eathernet cable. Make sure you don't have firewalls blocking traffic for the ftp.

You also need to make sure that the machine you are connecting to has the ftp service running. I do not believe it is part of the default install for XP. It is part of the IIS package, though you don't need to install of IIS.

And Windows still treats this type of connection as a Local Area Network Connection; a Direct Cable Connection is usually used for parallel cable connections.

Hmmm, most of my cables are grey or white....
You can most likely get a crossover cable for the price of the adaptor (but it is a neat geek toy )The crossover wiring looks like this and the patch cable wiring looks like this

All my patch is a nice ISP neon yellow, and my crossover is sky blue "but I did make that myself". I also have a drab tan rollover cable hehe.
