Need help maybe a virus

A friend of mine has an AMD 500/ running win98se.
She cannot use her winfax/ver.9.0 program. It just will not let her into anything.
After talking to her on the phone, I find out that her machine has been acting a little goofy the last couple of days. Presently she can only boot up into safe mode! I wonder if maybe she has a virus. I instructed her to use a bunch of 1.44 floppies and copy important files before going any further.
She has parallel port 100meg zip.
She has a legal copy of mcafee antivirus but it hasn’t been updated since it was installed 6 months ago.

Any suggestions from anyone would be appreciated.

Thanks
Pattie

Hi pattie - if winfax seems to be causing the problem, has she tried uninstalling it. She can do that in Safe Mode. Tell her to try that first then reboot. (Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs).

McAfee also causes some problems very similar to this. Tell her to uninstall McAfee too (if it hasnt been updated for six months, its not going to be much help anyway). She can always reinstall these programs, providing she has the CD or her licence number, if it turns out that they were not at fault.

Re: possible virus. Could be but I would try the above first. If she can boot to Windows it will be much easier to check out.

Thank you AnnMarie for you response.

It appears that there is a virus on her computer, when I find out more I will reply to you again.

Pattie.

Like AnnMarie said uninstall McAffee.

Then download this (http://www.grisoft.com/html/us_index.htm?session=30aead7589ff69d4e96374d3d915b 17d) and try running it and see if it helps....;)
