I'm trying to upgrade from Win95 to Win98 with a Win98 install CD from another machine which I no longer use.
I received an error message that says I already have an OS installed and I need need a "Win98 Upgrade CD".
Can you help ?
Thanks

Howdy and welcome to CTH:

You can use a full install cd to upgrade if you need to..

First, you need to find and rename the win.com file to win.old (or anything you want)..

Now use the Win98 cd and see if you get the error message..

Otherwise, you will need to re-formmat the hdd using a Win98 boot floppy and then install Win98.. This is the preferred method as upgrading seems to compound problems already on the system!!

Thanks for your quick reply. I tried renaming the files and got the same error message.
I've a old laptop that don't have a floppy nor CD drive. I've been using a network CD drive. Am I stuck ?

If I get a Win98 upgrade CD, does it require Win95 CD during upgrade ? I lost my Win95 CDs.

As long as Win95 is still on the system you are trying to upgrade, that's all you will need..

you have a full 98 cd... and no 95 cd
since you have that licence for a full 98, either live with the errors you have in 95 by forcing the full 98 to run setup, or format for a clean install, what will not have a history of things gone wrong in 95.

option 1

boot from CD or 98 floppy
I am assuming CD drive is assigned letter D:

c:
md w98
cd w98
copy D:\win98\*.*
setup /NTLDR /nr /d

viola
BUT, believe us when we tell you it is a poor choice...

so... option 2
boot from win 98 cd or win 98 floppy
format c: /q
reboot from same device you have just booted from
c:
md w98
cd w98
copy d:\win98\*.*
setup

hey

forget above... NO CDrom, NO floppydrive either, and that thing is a laptop?

for a clean install, if it cannot boot from an external or internal drive with removable media, just forget it...

it is probably underpowered anyhow.
so, before I even try help, you tell us what you have in that lapper
model
amount of RAM
processor
hard disk size

pentium 75... 32 Mb... and hard disk is big enough..

don't find boot options in the PDF yet... I be right back

you could copy win98 folder from CDrom to hard disk, and force dirty install with that /NTLDR with other options.

it surprises me it still runs after you changed win.com...

I know about these guys at http://www.anarchysoftware.com/syst...etto/win98.html (http://www.anarchysoftware.com/syst...etto/win98.html)
I followed their instructions but have the following error message during install "Your computer already has an operating system installed, which cannot be upgraded by this version of Setup. Your need to obtain the Windows98 Upgrade Message SU0168"

And I can't bootup machine from the PCMCIA CD drive.

Thanks

I finally managed to upgrade Win95 to Win98 by following the instructions in the following Microsoft website http://support.microsoft.com/kb/225252/EN-US/ , and renaming win.com and winver.exe

Thanks for your help.
