I got in an argument with a friend,
When someone, just rights "copy right" after something, does that make it legally copy righted?

Let me just preface this by saying IANAL...
As soon as you create something in most circumstances you own the copyright to it, irrespective of whether or not you put a © sign there. Any copyright declaration is just there for convenience so that you can demonstrate in a court when you claim to have done something that someone else has ripped off.
I say in most circumstances because anything you do for an employer is usually copyright them, unless you have some other agreement in place.
