how to install linux, help
hi guys i have a new os which i'de like to try,is ther anybody who could gently assist me step-by-step or give some advice on installing linux os.

To start off with, linux is comprised of many different versions we call 'distributions' or 'distros'. Do you have a specific distro you want to install?
Secondly, how will you be installing it? Will you partition your current hard drive making your windows partition smaller and installing linux on that drive, or will you install linux on a slave (second) hard drive? Thanks, -kage

thanks for the reply kage,wel im using the linux-mandrake, and i bootd it from a cd-rom. and to a primary drive. hope this info could help |

Ok, is windows already installed, or will you be installing it? If it is already installed, you're going to have to grab something like partition magic or get a knoppix live-cd and run qtparted, to resize your windows partition to make room for mandrake.

thanks, but im afraid that the windows is not installed yet i mean i want to start a fresh one, and i had run the cd which is linux-mandrake everuthing. here's another problem i well i hav to make a bootdisk in msdos in win98se but dont know how to make a bootdisk.hope u can give me an advice on how to make it.

Okay, then go ahead an install windows first. It'll save you some trouble later. Once you have windows installed, there are a few ways of making a boot disc. I think there is an option on the mandrake cd itself, that you can use under windows.
Make a boot floppy under(in) Windows as follows:
