Linux as a data recovery tool?

I got this e-mail today from PC Mechanic concerning data recovery from an XP based system using Knoppix. Since I don't use Linux I was wondering if this would work or if anyone has tried it. Many posters in the XP forum are in need of recovering their data cause of problems with XP and I'm always looking for a viable solution. Here's the e-mail.
Data Recovery with Knoppix

Did you know that one of the best tools for Windows data recovery is Linux? When all else fails and you desperately need information off of your hard drive, Linux is your safest bet. One of the best CD-bootable distributions out there is Knoppix (available for free at www.knoppix.org. Knoppix will allow you to not only possibly recover lost data that Windows simply cannot access, but also potentially fix hard drive errors and partition tables. Give it a whirl for all of your data recover needs.

Here's a link for an English version website.

Yeah, it is pretty good at fixing problems. I work at a computer repair shop, and have used it quite a few times to fix windows installs on occassions where windows would not boot, had trouble booting, was not found, or was to infected to use.

Its a live-cd, so you can use it without installing it, just to get a feel of it. Using some of the tools will require a little knowledge of linux, however.

I have used knoppix to access a drive that windows wouldn't boot and copied files off to a usb thumb drive. I recommend downloading Universal Boot CD (UBCD) full version. In addition to having almost every useful free utility a tech could need, it also includes knoppix. There is a good book called "Knoppix Hacks" that includes info on using knoppix to rescue windows.

I have used Knoppix as well. I saved alot of important files using this. it takes a while to load if you are on a slower computer or the computer has less RAM, but it's good in my book.
