so awhile back i did somethin very bad to my computer and it decided to not want to run windows. i would get this error about some files missing and blah blah blah. well i finally got it to reinstall windows but during the installation it said that some files were missing and i just clicked ok and it kept on going. so i fanlly got into windows 95 and it wont let me do certain things(example:not have any sound, connect to the internet.). so knowing me i started messing with it again and well now i cant load windows again. is there any way that i can reinstall windows and erase everything so i can have my computer be just like it was when i got it. liek factory settings and all. thanks for any help
edit: so i tried reinstalling windows again and it worked fine all through the installation part but i then came to a screen saying setting up hardware and another window popped up also titiled setting up harware and it reads: the file 'ati64.cnt' on Mach64 Windows95 driver, disk #1 could not be found. i dont have this so called disk#1. all i have is the CD that u use to reintall windows95. help please what should i do? edit once again: ok well i found the file taht was missing along with a bug number of others that are on the disk 1 and disk 2 and LT disk. well that took me awhile since i searched over search engines but i found them all. the setup continued on and said i needed to restart. so i did and it started loading and now a black screen comes up and says windows protection error or somethin like taht and that i need to restart my computer. so i do so and it takes me to a menu of normal, safemode....etc. so what should i do now? Hi tjk0123 - welcome to CTH. This is not really my bag but I did notice that you said you had collected drivers off the net. You may have installed the wrong set of drivers. Have a look here.

ok well i followed ur advice and wen to the site. i then went to find a driver and searched what they had. i found two files:64mpg303.exe and 64w95303.exe. i followed teh instructions that came with the files and installed them both but still i dont have any sound or i cant get on the internet. my default mp3 player is winamp, and when i try to play a song of some sort of audio file a message pops up and it reads:another program is using my sound card and that i need to switch some thing in winamp options or get a sound card that allows multiple streams of audio. how do i do that(multiple streams)? it was like that before this mess happened. thanks

Re: Drivers
I agree with AnnMarie that your problem stems from a lack of drivers that were designed for the devices you have in your system. Every OS needs a device driver for each device that's part of the system. Windows supplies some "generic" drivers to get you through the installation, otherwise not many people would be able to install an OS & the manufacturers' would have a real tough time making a profit.
You need to gather up all the drivers for your system & install them properly. You do this, one driver set at a time, & to make life simpler, remove the old ones using the Device Manager Utility. You can install them the same way or you can reboot and wait for the OS to ask you for the driver. Reboot after each driver installation even if the OS doesn't ask for it. Most of these drivers will be on CD's or floppies that came with the hardware - don't forget that the motherboard has a bunch of drivers for it that should be installed into the OS. If you're missing any, then you'll need to post the make & model of each piece of hardware & we can try to point you in the right direction. You must do this in a systematic manner - helter skelter will only aggravate the situation. |
