Trying to get a P2 machine going again------checked dir on disk---empty.
Did a reinstall of Win 95 using win 98 boot disk for the cdrom drives.
Reinstall went well, no problem with install from cdrom drive.
Bios recognozes the 2 cdrom drives, in windows they show up in device manager, showing no conflicts, and device is working properly.
Was able to use the drives in windows, then now "not ready reading" comes up.
Swapped dofferent cd's, same message, swapped with other cdrom drives, same message.
Checked the ribbon cables for looseness, downloaded and installed driver for the D drive Mitsumi , same.
Changed IDE to Dual , no change.
Disks go in, spin up, lights on.
Can't get through this one, especially since they had worked through the OS after the 1st and 2nd boot up.
I had attempted to install the ATI rage pro drivers, and the ESS sound card drivers.
(I have deleted them since, no change)
Scratching my head, probably over an easy fix>>>>>>
Any takers out there????

Welcome to CTH

Try this:

START | RUN type in the following:

regedit (hit OK)

Now go to the menu at the top to Edit | Find and type in the following:

NOIDE

If it finds an instance it will be highlighted hit DELETE key, now hit F3 for it to find another instance, continue untill it comes up and says done.

Hit the X top right to exit.

Reboot

Let us know

Did the regedit to look for noide-------nothing found.
Should also mention when I use the bootdisk, once again the drives are found, but same message device not ready reading.
Also I have turned off virus check in boot --- no change.

Also tried deleteing the 2 cdroms from device manager and rebooting so windows can find and install again.
Same thing is happening, the cdroms are recognized, shown in windows device manager showing device operating properly, but still "not accessible device not ready reading.

Right click on "My Computer" then to "Properties" under the Proformance TAB does it say it is running in MS DOS compat mode????

In Device Manager are there any Yellow marks next to any devices?

Hi, Murf.......I'll have to check the properties when I get home from work.
There is no yellow "flags" over the two devices in device manager, and says no conflicts.
I am trying to see if I have any IDE ribbon around, and try replacing that, however it would be odd that both cables are no good at the same time, but I'll give it a go.....
Thanks for keeping up with this one.........!! I appreciate it!!

Problem Solved!
Switched PNP/PCI configuration to :
Resource controlled by: (chose Auto intead of Manual)
Seems to be working fine.
Murf, would this setting possibly cause any problems?
By the way, thanks for your replies.

Switched PNP/PCI configuration to :

Resource controlled by: (chose Auto intead of Manual)
This allows the BIOS to chose IRQ/Resources and or Windows as it boots. You must of had a conflict and Windows could not load the right drivers or resource because more than one device was using the same IRQ/resource.

Setting it to auto allows either the BIOS or Windows to do this. This is a common problem and I would always recommend auto configuration for any device that allows that setting. Computers are not as dumb as we think.

Glad you figured it out, we may of got there eventually, well maybe. Thanks for letting us know.
