so I originally put my linux partition on a 20GB drive, now that is not enough, if I bought a bigger drive, how could I put the OS from the 20 on the bigger one without loosing data? maybe wrong forum.

Look into the text-based program 'parted'. It will (I believe) let you copy a filesystem from one drive/partition to another.
I've only used that feature once, for a small 512mb usb stick, so I don't know how well it will work on a larger scale.
