I have an old Packard Bell computer. I kept having problems with it so I decided to re-format the hard drive thinking I could just re-install Windows95 from the Master CD... I now know better.

After reviewing several postings on this site I have done the following -

Made a bootdisk and did the following steps

I started the computer with CDrom support. The computer then showed:

The diagnostic tools were successuly loaded to Drive D.

MSCDEX Version 2.25
Copyright (c) Miscrosoft Corp. 1986-1995.
All rights reserved.

Device E=Drive MSCD001 Unit 0

To get help, type HELP and press enter
A:>

I put the Windows95 Master CD in the cdrom and at the A:> prompt I typed:

A:\>copy E:\win95\*.*\ C:win95

and it came back as
File not found E:\win95\*.*\ C

I am totally confused because when I look at the E: directory it shows
WIN95 <DIR>.

Can anyone offer some help?

Welcome to CTH.

I think you misplaced a \ . Try it like this:

copy E:\win95\*.* C:\win95

Post back if you encounter more problems.

I have tried it from the A prompt, c prompt and e prompt. Nothing seems to work. I am at a loss.

Howdy and welcome to CTH:

Once you use the boot disk and start with cd-rom support, why don't you just put the Windows cd into the drive, change the drive letter to the cd-rom (will be one higher than normal) and just type in setup ??

Keep the cd in the drive and make sure you are on the cd-rom drive letter..

Now, type in dir /p

Scroll through the cd directory/files and see if there is a setup.exe program on the disk..

BTW.. this is an original and not a copy right (different setup)..

I am also dealing with an old Packard Bell computer and have the same problem.........is there any way (seems a bit extreme) of installing Windows 95 onto a slave drive of a newer Windows XP machine?

Using the working XP machine to install Windows 95 on the older hard-drive (set to slave) using the original Windows 95 CD and Master CD????

Probably a bad idea but i have used all the text-based (DOS style) solutions within the WIN95 forum and have had no luck (bad command, missing file, corrupted files ect).

If i remember correctly I also had an HP 95 and mine needed the floppy and CD inserted at the same time. You might want to try that.

with luck, you might find a utility on that packard cdrom that will make you a emergency restore floppy.

you have the model and serial number on the back of the machine, and you could use this to find a floopy download at packard-bell site.

this was for the club series

Creating New Master CD Boot Disk
In the C:\DRIVERS\MCDBF folder there is a file called either MKMCDBF.BAT or MKMCDFD.BAT. If you run this program and put a floppy disk into the disk drive, it will format the disk, and create a new Master CD boot disk for you.
