I had Ubuntu on an old hard drive once, but I decided to get rid of it. Now, however, I got a newer, larger hard drive, and saved 10 GB for some distro. I was thinking about which one, so does anyone have any recommendations? Also, I was wondering about the differences between Kubuntu and Ubuntu (I know KDE vs. gnome, but are there other differences)?

Ubuntu is ok, but if you really want to learn linux/unix and use a real OS I'd look into either Gentoo or Slackware. Either of those will make you learn as well as offer you a very robust OS. My first love is FBSD but I'm oldschool, all the cool kids these days are running Gentoo.

OK. I think I'll give Gentoo a try tomorrow. Thanks for the help!

I just thought of one question. Can the installer find my 2 Ubuntu partitions (swap and storage), merge them, then create two new ones for itself? How would I go about doing that?
Thanks!
I have another question. What do I type in the prompt while installing Gentoo? I want to merge my #2 and #5 partitions on my primary master hard drive and then install it there.

FBSD is fantastic. I wish NVidia would update their drivers more often for it though and actually produce some 64bit drivers.

I don't think that I am going to install Gentoo. I don't really know how.

The Gentoo documentation is excellent - particularly their install guide. If you have a couple of hours free with another computer to use to refer to their manual you'll have fun if you like installing OS's
