vector help

i typed a block of text and i want to change the color of it to a picture i made. i successfuly did this in a bitmap (rasterizing the text->selecting the letters->change the layer to the picute i made->copy and paste into a new layer) but i really want it in vecor. how would i recreate this same effect in freehand (the only vector program i own) or if you know how in illustrator or any other vector editor that i might be able to do the same steps. yay if that made any sense. thanks

What program is it your using? And do you have access to any paint shop pro programs?

im using freehand mx. and i dont have access to paint shop pro. i do have ps and fireworks.
