win ME wont boot

I'm currently running win ME on our main computer with updated norton and spyblocker. wife was doing alot of reasearching last night bouncing around to alot of commercial web sites and says the comp suddenly went to a black screen and now wont load properly.
when started it looks like ME is loading fine until it gets to the background screen and then stops with a hour glass.
Tried booting to safe mode, gets to "safe mode" in all four corners and then stops with a hour glass, no response to any input.
So i tried booting from a floppy with a boot from bootdisk.com and now i get a "disk error replace an strike any key".
I don't have any recovery disk, dog ate them (its true)
Any ideas on what i can try next??
