Outlook can't find Word

I have MS Small Business Outlook 2002 on a Win XP platform. I am having problems trying to reply to e-mails. When I click to reply, I get an error message: "This form requires Word as your e-mail editor, but Word is either busy or cannot be found. The form will be opened in the Outlook editor instead."

What is going on here? I ran the setup disk again, first as a repair install and then as a complete uninstall and re-install. I checked and found winword.exe running on the task manager. I shut it down, but it didn't help.

And now, I just looked at Task Manager again and it shows winword.exe running again.

A few things you can check - in OUTLOOK, you have the option of using WORD as your email editor, or Outlook itself. From what it sounds like, you may have it set to the first one. Start OUTLOOK, and goto TOOLS => OPTIONS => MAIL FORMAT and uncheck "Use Microsoft Word as your email editor". See if that makes a difference. Good Luck

Since the simplest fix is to tell Outlook not to use Word as the email editor:
1. Select Tools>Options from the menu in Outlook.
2. Click on the Mail Format tab.
3. Uncheck the " Use Microsoft Word to edit e-mail messages" checkbox

I took too long to type it out...got beat by three minutes!

I know about that stuff. However, I frequently use the clipboard feature for my part-time job and NEED to use Word.

No, I'm not in a spamming business; I send reports to college coaches about prospects I know about and, rather than retyping the same information and same subject to every coach, I utilize the clipboard to get it out quickly because these are reports that go to every coach in the Southeast.

Your question and response does not add up. So do you WANT word to be the editor ? You made it sound like the problem was that OUTLOOK tries to open word to edit a message and then gives you the error. Anyway, said you did a complete un-install and re-install. What did you un-install and re-install ? Windows ? Outlook ? Word ?? Do you have MS Office on your machine ?

See the Microsoft Knowledge Base articles, You cannot use Word as your e-mail editor when Symantec Norton AntiVirus is installed on your computer and Outlook/WordMail Tries to Use Word Viewer as Editor.

OK, let's back up and punt.

From the top...I need Word as my Outlook editor. Outlook is part of the MS Office package (I should have said Office 2002 but wasn't thinking clearly). I did a reinstall of MS Office.

This problem occurred a few weeks ago, then it went away. Now it's starting again. I try to create a new e-mail using MS Word (under Actions), and it says it "can't create item."

I do not have Norton Anti-Virus but do use Zone Alarm Security Suite which includes AV, anti-spam and firewall.

Update: I followed the second link and looked in Add/Remove for Word Viewer 97-2000, but it wasn't there. Nevertheless, I downloaded the 2003 version. I'm still having the same problem. I'm going to try a reboot to reset the registry.

I'm back...no luck. I even turned off the anti-spam program in ZA and it didn't help.

Hi Irish_Temper. Is your Office installation an upgrade? If so, see if this article helps.

Hello again, Ann Marie!

I don't remember upgrading; however, a file-level view of the Outlook folder in C:\\Program Files indicates an "Office 10" and and "OFFICE 11," so I must assume that it was upgraded at some point (I don't recall specifically simply because XP routinely asks me to upgrade MS programs on my computer!). However, the registry edit link you provided does not include deletion instructions for Office 10, only 8 and 9.

Update: OK, this is getting very not-funny. I did everything it said, including the necessary backups. I deleted the Office/8 and Office/9 keys in LOCAL MACHINE and CURRENT USER. I did a reboot and fired up Outlook again. Same problem.

I wonder if I my arm is strong enough to hit Bill Gates with my machine from here?

Did you do the "repair" after deleting those keys. I might be wrong but I think that is part of the fix.

Yes. Sorry, but I neglected to mention that fact. And sorry that I haven't responded sooner; I work third shift and was asleep last night before work and all day today after getting off.

No problem.

Try this. Open My Computer and go to Tools > Folder Options and click on the File Types tab. Click on (NONE) URL:MailTo Protocol > Advanced. Make sure that open is selected and click on Edit. Where it say's "Application used to perform action" paste the below string.

C:\PROGRA~1\MICROS~2\Office10\OUTLOOK.EXE" -c IPM.Note /m "%1"

and click OK. Reboot and let us know if this helped.

When I pasted the thread, it said it couldn't be found, so I manually browsed to find OUTLOOK.EXE and added the "IPM.Note" tag at the end. It accepted the thread, but it didn't fix the problem.

You say "This problem occurred a few weeks ago, then it went away. Now it's starting again"
Have you tried restoring to an earlier restore point? Or will this cause you more headaches!?

That had occurred to me, but I didn't do it in the course of trying to identify the source of the problem. Unfortunately, I just checked, and the earliest restore point is Wednesday, the day after I first posted. I'm wondering if there's some kind of bug (virus/spyware/adware) or something that is running on my system and blocking use of Word; those things get on my machine regardless of how careful I am.

If you read my earlier posts, Word starts without my starting it and without my knowledge, because when I CTRL-ALT-DEL to Task Manager, it shows WINWORD in the list.

Just in case of malware, here's my HJT log for those of you who can interpret it (calling Ann Marie!):
