Hello,
I am trying to reformat the hd in my dinasor of a laptop....Toshiba Tecra 700ct.
I have done the fdisk and have started the farmatting. It completes about 2% then a message pops up saying "Trying to recover allocation unit" while making an unusal sound emitting from the hd.

After a couple attempts at trying to recover allocation unit there is a new message that says "Format Terminated"

Is the harddrive friied?

Thanks Murray for your reply.

In addition to my last post, consider this....

My son had slammed down the monitor in frustration. I read somewhere that doing so could ruin the harddrive from excessive vibration, etc...

I guess I'll locate another harddrive. Do you have any good resources for a Toshiba Tecra 700ct 2.1GB harddrives?

Well, yeah. Hard drives are made these days to overcome certain abuse.
But the distance (flying height) between the read/write heads and the platter is around 50nm (0.05µ, a human hair is around 100µ), so one bump too many or too hard will crash a head in a microsecond. Goodbye disk.:michaelan
