Hi

is power on speakers OK?
plugged in OK?
are speakers OK ?
( an easy test = use headphone jack on CDROM drive)

when you look at soundcard with hardware manager, are all drivers installed?

no conflix = no yellow spats
nor red (disabled)

the soundcard may very well have installed more than just drivers
(things like soundmixer)

in the mixer, you may have things muted

windows CDplayer uses the hardwired line to soundcard
(like I said, speakers can be tested by plugging mini-jack into front of CDROM drive, and wheel on it must be used to adjust headphone output... and that wheel CAN sometimes mute soundcard CD-IN line.)

mediaplayer and the like use IDE ribbon for sound.
if mixer has no muted devices, and all else (including direct play thru mini-jack) looks okay, the ribbon may need to be reseated.

its been a good while I last set up a win 95 machine...
but above may help you find the answer.

Hi Grover.
What software do you noramlly use to play audio files.

This error message is normally generated when Windows has a file association for (in this case) audio files and the program it thinks should be used to play them has been uninstalled or deleted.

A couple of possibilities:
You installed something that took over the associations then unistalled it because you didn't like it.
or
The program you use has had some sort of curruption of it's main executable file (e.g. winamp.exe).

In either case, reinstalling the program you WANT TO USE to play audio files should reassociate the files with that player.

Thanks for your technical help--I think now I have the answer--I was deleting unwanted files (cookies-Temp's etc) from my computer to help it run faster--I may have inadvertantly deleted the file that error said was missing PROGRAM,exe-----
Unfortunately-I empties my recycle bin- --do you know of any way I could recover this file from my computer???
Thanks so much for yout help

Hi groverplashke

since missing program.exe is an error message that does not neccesarily mean the missing file is actually called program.exe, we can not exatly tell you what file you need.

BUT...

you can go into control panel, add remove, windows setup flag, multimedia, and uninstall windows CDplayer
reboot

and then re-install it

and if that don't fix it,
start
run
SFC

note - if you never done it before, you could be outta luck..
the utility is meant for restoring system files
but you can run it a second time, and then it might tell you about missing files...

Jaak your right, SFC came out in Win/98....

I would start with the Uninstall and Reinstall of Windows Media Player.....

Just curious, have you tried to open Window media player and point it to the CD to see if you can get sound. If you can, there should be a setting in the Options or tools menu as to what files you want to associate it with. (I dont have Win/95 so I can't remember where the settings are)
