Hi,
I'm new, I've been having lots of problems lately, start up real slow, settings automatically changing, and I think I have a virus, I'm working on install of new virus detection and protection. Now the taskbar is blank except to show the start button on lefthand side. The clock and everyting else is missing that is normally there. I uninstlled a bunch of programs yesterday, I 'm not sure if I deleted any programs just files, I only uninstlled some programs. I reinstalled windows98 plus today. Any suggestions to fix this would be greatly appreciated.

Hi.
Can someone tell me the possible reasons for the taskbar only showing the start button on left, no clock or anything normally there. Startup and overall function has been slow, I think there is a virus and I'm trying to install v-software, and I reinstalled win98 Plus yesterday because I unintstall lots of stuff the day before and I thought I might have got rid of something I needed. The taskbar has moved on its own , would not respond to commands and if I reset it, it went back to the undesired way upon restart or reboot. I've come a long way, to shorten the problem list, now just want taskbar back to normal..where are the other things at? Please help, I would really appreciate it. If this looks like a dupicate post, I was not sure the first went. and I'm sorry

Ok lets try the easiest first. You do understand that all that junk on the taskbar slows your machine down, and really all you need up there is your virus, clock, volumn.
Go to start/run/type in msconfig........see if there is a check in selective startup, if not put one in there then click on startup tab.........and see if there are checkmarks in what's listed and only put check marks in what you want to show up on the taskbar.

I'll work on that , but at last work I tried the task bar showed nothing not even startup button butwhen I reboot it is there periodically, And I recently found out all things should not be on the taskbar thanks, I'll return

Sounds like a case of ad/spy ware taking over. scrub your machine with something like MicroSoft AntiSpyware. Although the best solution might be to backup your data, format hard drive and re-install windows. Good luck

Installing an antivirus program on an already infected computer seldom results in anything good.
Try the online virus scans first... Bit Defender (http://www.bitdefender.com/scan/licence.php), Panda (http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/activescan.asp?language=2&Country=63&Partner=1&Ref=EN-PR-AS-107) and Housecall (http://housecall.antivirus.com/housecall/start_pcc.asp). They're free and they work. Run at least two of them, all three if you're willing to take the time. Like spyware removal programs, each tends to find, and be able to remove, things the others might miss.
Unfortunately, Windows AntiSpyware's system requirements are Windows XP or 2000. However, Spybot (http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000-8022_4-10289035.html?tag=lst-0-1) and Ad-Aware (http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10045910.html?part=69274&subj=dlpage&tag=button) work on Win98 and are free.

There are two topics from this poster on the same problem.

Can a mod merge them?
