What were you doing when you got this message?

Hi, I had the computer off, shut down ,then I restarted it and this pops up and then I click OK and it goes away and I can use my computer, but this never appeared befor, is there something wrong? If I shut down the computer and restart it will still show the required cpqmxer dll error.

Did you remove any programs that were coming up on start up? It sounds like a program has got corrupted. Check that and if you have then it probably left something behind.

Using the dos mode has worked some miricles for me because it fixes stuff most of the time, so you can try this also. Boot to dos and type in scanreg /fix

When you go to shut down it should give you the option to reboot in Dos. If not then when your rebooting keeping hitting F8 until the Dos prompt comes up or it may give you choices like use command prompt. After you run scanreg /fix then type exit to return to windows

Howdy,
Is "cpqmxer.dll" the exact wording of the error message? Go to Start-Find-File or Folders, and run a search for cpqmixer.dll (note the spelling difference). Best I can tell cpqmixer.dll is a legit Compaq file (possibly related to some sound function), located in the System folder in Windows. Post back what you find. I concur with Idnew that this would most likely appear as a result of some program being added/removed, but let's see what you've got for now.

go to start/find/find files/folder and type that in cpqmixer.dll and see if it finds it:fyi: Thanks I tried that and nothing came up I even went to the advanced search, the only things that has changed on my computer is when first started up or restart, the compaq dialog box comes up asking to regster ect and just before that the [ the required cpqmixer. DLL not found pops up], the only other thing that does not come up is a sliding scale volume bar at the bottom, but everything else works,I even ran the maintainace wizard, nothing was found.

Given the situation it will be difficult to identify what program is calling up the missing dll file. As a workaround, let's see if you can restore the missing file. You may want to print the following guidelines to have on hand for the process. They are not specifically for your exact model, but may have just enough information to give you the right direction:

To install individual files from the Compaq 4000/4400/4500/4700 Series Recovery CD, carry out the following steps,

* Get hold of a copy of WinZip from http://www.winzip.com in order to view the archive contents without decompressing first.
* Insert the Quick Recovery CD and look for a folder containing 10 zip files (normally called na02).
* Double clicking on a Zip file will open that file and show a list of the contents. Hunt around until you find the file(s) you're looking for.
* Highlight the file(s) you want and click on the Extract icon.
* It should scan the zip file for the files and then ask you to enter a password. Enter (without quotes) "PREDATOR ###", where the ### is the last three numbers in the zip file name (the name that appears on the WinZip window title bar). Ie, for the file Win010.zip, the password would be PREDATOR010. For the file Compaq26.zip, the password would be PREDATOR026.

N.B. For the Compaq 4540 & 4882 (and probably most of the new Compaqs), the password is SMDCONSUMER (in capitals).

If you do not have winzip already you can use the trial version available at that site. This may also work with other programs that decompress files, if they provide the listing option mentioned above.

(The manual extraction process was copied from utksupport.co.uk)

Hey Rhondas, I wouldn't box myself in like that by asking one specific CTH member. Looking at the stats this thread has been viewed over 150 times as of now - 150+ possible answers there. Not too clear where you stand - did you try to extract the missing dll as per the instructions? Do you have reason to believe the Logitech software will resolve the cpqmixer.dll issue? As to loading the keyboard software that would be a personal preference thing. If you paid extra to have all the extra buttons and wheels you'll want the software to get your money's worth. However, any changes while trying to resolve an existing problem would not be recommended.

I have a few more additional comments to add to Ohswyn's thoughts that this may be sound related, left over dredge or the file its self is missing...

It is a Compaq file. Via a Google search (http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?p=260632#), there are a few references to this file problem and win98. "Missing" and "sound related" are two of these possibilities, but it may not be directly related but rather indirectly related to sound device. Some have pinned it down to the "Total Access (http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?p=260632#) Keyboard (http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?p=260632#)" (my guess is the Compaq keyboard probably has a sound volume controls built into it). They have reported that after making sure that any HP (http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?p=260632#) or Compaq keyboard is installed correctly the problem was resolved. This may or may not apply to you depending on what type of keyboard your computer has detected and is using in device manager or if you have an indication that hp keyboard software is being loaded via "msconfig">startup" tab.

That's some intuitive work on that submitter's part for sure. If you haven't already loaded the software, please check one other thing first. Go to Start-Run. Type msconfig, hit OK. Click on the System.ini tab. Click the plus sign to expand the boot, keyboard and boot description settings. If you find cpqmixer.dll listed, post back where the line is located in that setting and the exact wording of the line.

Edit add - in msconfig, please don't uncheck anything or make any changes right now.

Do post all your findings here. Again, it allows others to review the situation, both for added opportunity for feedback and so everyone can learn from the process. Still looking for a source here. Please go Here (http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html) and download StartupList. Run it and post back here the logfile it creates.

in compaq help, I found the cure, here it is, first go to keyboards [[[[[[[first I removed and let windows reconfigure my key board next.
As for the issue with the popup message, please follow the steps provided below: 1. Click Start, and then Run 2. In the command box, type msconfig; and click OK. 3. Click Startup. 4. Uncheck all the programs except RECGUARD, KBD, PCHBUTTON (if listed) 5. Click OK 6. Restart the system If you see a message "System Configuration Utility You are using the selective startup for troubleshooting your system", check the option and click OK. This occurs if you are using the Selective startup option but not using the normal startup to reduce the number of startup programs.]]]]

 Absolutely excellent! Not only did you find a fix for the problem, but I know you are now aware from any searches that there were few available solutions, and your response here just created a location for the next person with the same problem to find an answer.
