Unhappy Reinstalled Windows 95, now no sound

I just reinstalled Windows 95 on my laptop. I used the one that is intended for portable computers. When I was finished, I couldn't get the sound to work. The sound symbol that should show up on the task bar isn't there. I went to the manufacturer's site and downloaded drivers for the sound system but it still doesn't work. What am I doing wrong?

Laptops are usually a closely integrated package & you should get the entire original driver set for these & install this as soon as you've installed the OS. The individual drivers, such as for sound, video, etc are usually updates to the original package and as such it's best to apply them after you've installed the original motherboard package.

You should go to the manufacturer's site & see if it's possible to download just the drivers for a specific OS. Some manufacturer's won't do this for you, so you'll have to contact them & see what their response is. If they do, they usually like to get the unit's serial number before supplying anything.

Hi ferndoodle, welcome to the forums.

What does device manager tell you about what Windows has detected in "Sound and game controllers" section?

Smurfy, It says that the device is not present, not working properly or does not have all the drivers installed. See your documentation (code 24)

hi

question.
does this laptop have a modem built in?
modem voice wave device often clashes with soundcard.

suggestion.
boot into safe mode,
hardware manager.
if you have double entries for same piece of hardware, remove all entries thereof.
also remove the device that does not work.

reboot, and re-install drivers.

another question.
what do you mean when you say you used the one intended for portable computers?
Was that a disc that came with THIS machine?

Thanks for your reply. I finally had to bring the computer into Compaq and have it looked at as nothing worked for me. It turned out that the sound was broke. I will have to replace the whole motherboard in order to get the sound back. I am in the process of acquiring a used motherboard to reinstall in my computer. This will be my first attempt to do this too. *lol* Live and learn I guess.
