This seems like it should be a simple solution, but I'm at a loss as to exactly what to do. I've gotten some emails from a friend, those forwarded jokes we all get! When I try to open them, I get the message " This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel." In the Attach: line, it's Fwd_(whatever the joke is)_email. I get forwarded jokes from others, and never have problems opening them. Any thoughts? Thanks.

It seems like your friend's email provider is changing the file name of the attachment and replacing non-alphanumeric characters with underscores. The attached file looks like it should be "Fwd: (subject name).email, and his mail account replaces the colon and period with underscores. This means your computer cannot recognize the attached file as a fowarded email, and doesn't know what to do with it. You can still open the attachment by choosing to open it with your email program (you will have to do this every time, and don't choose to make the file association), but a better solution would be to get your friend to ask his email provider why they are renaming his files.
