Hello all,

I hope you can help.

I have two Windows 2000 SP4 PCs. They are connected to the office network via workgroup, not server. There are also a couple of macs in the network. The PCs are in a separate workgroup from the macs. Each PC has a static IP specified. The IP mask is 255.255.255.0 in both PCs. They both have internet access at all times, this doesn't fail.

PC #1 has a shared folder that PC #2 needs to access. This shared folder gives full control permissions to everyone in the Sharing | Security screen. PC #2 then maps a drive (E:) to this shared folder and off it goes. It all works OK.

The problem is that intermitently during the day or when I come back to work in the morning, PC #2 cannot see PC #1 and the drive mapping is lost. I get a red "X" over the drive in My Computer. When I try to ping or browse PC #2 to map the drive again I get the error "Network Path not found".

When I then go to PC #1 and try to browse or ping or go to "computers near me" PC #1 cannot see PC #2. I have to shut down both PCs, sometimes turn off the firewall. Sometimes this works, or sometimes it gets stuck like that until it's "good and ready" and wants to let me in. I need help. It happens everyday.

I have Norton Personal Firewall and Norton Antivirus installed in both PCs. They both have the latest updates and upgrades. The firewall specifies both IP addresses as allowed access, and also specifies the program which need the mapped drive (E:) to be shared from one PC to the other.

The network properties are NETBIOS on, TCP/IP on, static IP addresses, 10/100 mbps connection and the fact that both PC maintain their internet connectivity.

You can email me if you want: anubix @ yahoo . com.

Thanks.

Purely an opinion,
if I was dealing with those machines I'd eliminate "Norton Personal Firewall and Norton Antivirus installed in both PCs" as the first step. As in uninstall everything Norton and Symantec showing in Add/Remove
Programs in Control Panel.

You can't get a good gauge of what's interfering with a network if software like that is installed on a machine.

Spider,

I thought about this but I'm concerned about security. Befor eoutting the firewall and antivirus we were getting hit pretty hard with all kinds of junk, viruses, attacks, etc. How do I protect the computers and still be able to troubleshoot the cause of this error? I would prefer not to track these PCs down to the switch room. There are so many connections on that switch and they are not labeled properly.

In a command prompt in each machine nbtstat -n
is ..__MSBROWSE__.<01> in the list?

When the network drops, right-mouse exit/close the firewall from the system tray
and then try mapping the drive to see if you still get the "Network path not found" error.

On both computers nbtstat -RR in a command prompt will refresh the NetBIOS
next time it drops use the command to see if remapping is possible.

What are each machines ping results from point to point in the network?
