View Full Version : Open Firmware - Mac OS 9. Bless System folder?

Hi there,

I am a bit of a Mac novice and hope someone can help... I have (very stupidly) modified the Startup Disk preferences on my Imac (OS 9.2 installed) so that the wrong folder (ie NOT the System Folder!) was selected. When the system tried to boot it briefly shows an Apple symbol and then stops. The Imac came preinstalled with OS 9 and I don't have the original disk to reinstall.

I have tried to set the 'boot-device' variable in Open Firmware to point to the System Folder, but have had no success. I suspect that maybe I need to point it to a file directly? Or do I need to 'bless' the System Folder somehow? I am completely stumped! Can anybody help?

Thanks in advance,
Jack.

Are you getting a blinking question mark?

If you ware, that's a case where yes, you may simply need to bless the system folder. To do this you'll need the iMac to boot up though. From a boot CD or external drive or something, usually the OS installation disk. Once it boots select [startup volume]/System Folder/ControlPanels/Startup Disk When it launches highlight the correct System Folder for the iMac. Then restart. The System folder will then be bless because you manually selected it.

If you're not getting the blinking question mark..... what are you getting.

I am actually just getting an Apple logo (not blinking) and the boot sequence stops. It appears to me that the computer is trying to boot from a folder that is not a system folder. However, resetting the pram (cmd-opt-p-r when booting) has not made a difference. I suspect that I either need to bless the System Folder from Open Firmware or else source a CD to enable me to boot to the OS to change the startup disk.

Anyway, thanks for the help.

Cheers,
Jack.
