thinkpad 380xd win95 error (compressed drive or disk cache utility must be removed)
Hello all! I am trying to reinstall win95 on a Thinkpad 380xd for a friend of mine and i have formatted and fdisked, and when i try to run windows setup i keep getting a message that it can install because the drive is compressed or a disk cache utility is running. is there some hidden partition with these thinkpads? i don't have a recovery cd and am trying to install a fresh version. I have tried it with fat 16 and then started all over again and tried with fat32. my friend said he doesn't think this drive has been compressed. i was afraid that ibm has some sort of proprietary crap going on here. any help would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome to CTH.
I'm not as knowledgeable as some of the other people that help around here but if I were you I'd use Darik's Boot and Nuke to indiscriminately wipe everything on the hard drive then Fdisk, then Format and try to install again. Darik's Boot and Nuke can be found here: http://dban.sourceforge.net/

hi
reboot with that floppy, and then try again... if it gives you same error, run this UNLOCK C: again reboot, and try again.
