I've been having a strange problem for quite a while. It all started several months ago. My computer was working fine, it ran everything well, and there was nothing wrong with it.
My drivers at the time were a bit older, so I decided that I needed to stay up to date. Shortly after getting it installed, I noticed something a bit odd. When I would try to play any sort of video, my system would suddenly slow to a crawl, and I would have to end whatever program was playing the video. After doing so, it would return to normal. I didn't think much of it, so I uninstalled the driver, and everything returned to normal.
Fast forward a month or two: I decide that I should get the new drivers that had just come out. I needed this for Battlefield 2 to display properly. So anyway, I download them from Nvidia's site, and to my horror, the same thing happened with video. Needless to say, I was quite displeased. Battlefield 2 stopped working altogether, shortly after, but I digress.
The only remedy to this issue, besides rolling back my drivers was to go into Properties>Settings>Advanced>Troubleshoot, and turn 'Hardware Acceleration' down 3 notches from full(which disables all DirectDraw and Direct3d Acceleration). At this point, I can watch videos, but my graphics are messed up in other areas, and I can't play games. This issue has been killing me for months, and I am sick of having to do this unnecessary work just to watch video or play my games.
My specs are as such:
P4 2.66Ghz
1GB RAM(Not sure what kind)
Leadtek GeForce 6600GT
80GB HDD, with 24% free
Hopefully I posted this in the right forum.

It's also worth noting that all of my features work when I downgrade from DX 9.0c to DX 8.1.
