Hi - I'm not sure if this is the correct place for this post or not...

I am trying to find out information about using a firewall with Windows 2000 Professional. Our computer is having a large number of virus infections due to the fact that we are connected to a large network that has many many many viruses. I tried talking to our IT people and they said a firewall is not a good idea on our computer because we have Windows 2000. Now I really don't trust our IT people too much, so can anyone give me any suggestions about this? We get at least 2 virus attacks a day currently and I can't keep up with it. Would a firewall help me? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Howdy:

An active up to date anti-virus program would be better!!

However, nothing wrong with a firewall either.. Depending on how your network is setup, you should already have a hardware firewall (router) and your IT Dept. should know how to configure that..

I would NOT suggest just up and installing one on your own without the permission of your IT Dept but, that being said, Sygate and Zone Alarm are both very good.. You would need to purchase the commercial version as the free version is only available to the home user and not for commercial system use!!

Murrary - We have current and up to date anti-virus software as well as a firewall on our router and supposedly on the network as well. Should these factors all be sufficent? (even though we are still getting virus attacks).

Also, those firewalls you listed, they are all compatable with 2000? Just curious. Thanks for youe help.

As long as they are properly configured, they should work..

As for the Firewalls, yep.. they work with Win2K..

Did anyone think the virii/trojans may be getting in due to people putting them there by using an infected file they brought to work from home??
