PLease Help with sound problem

I picked up a used computer system for my daughter. The set of speakers was missing. When using the computer, there is no sound. I can't seem to figure out how to fix it. I have a cheap set of speakers I could use but there are no instructions.....when I plug them into the system, there is no sound. I know nothing about what to do here.....can you PLEASE help me?!?

Right click on "My Computer" then go to "Properties" then to "Device Manager"

Scroll down to Sound, Video ect... Click on the + sign are there Sound entries in there?

Also

Start | Settings | Control Panel | Multimedia

Under use for playback is there an entry?

Where are the speaker plug on the back of the computer? Does it appear they are part of a Sound Card?? Would be located between one of the slots in the back. Or are they located nearer where you plug in the mouse/keyboard?

Under devices, there are several Opti-Plug & PLay devices listed; none of which are being used....(but it says they're working properly).
Under multimedia, it says Sound System Playback, and the volume is up.
There are more than one speaker connections as far as I can see......both are in slots. Neither seem to work....but there is also another connection there that might be for speakers (?)....its a 15-hole plug (do you know what I mean?) as opposed to the single. Could that have been for speakers? I don't have any speakers with that type of connection. Everything I look up as far as devices, says everything is working properly....but ???? Thanks for taking the time to help me.

I don't think you have sound drivers installed. Go HERE and download and run EVEREST program. It will tell you everything you need to know about your computer and what devices are installed. Then post what you see as far as SOUND Card.

I am wondering if this is a passive sound system...are the speakers you are using powered? meaning do they have a power supply that plugs into the wall? If not if the sound device is passive and not putting out amplified sound then non powered speakers will not put out any sound.

Ummmm......I wasn't sure where to look....but under Multimedia, it says Opti86C931 Audio Card. Under Devices: MPU-401 Compatible, Opti-Plug & Play Device, Opti-Plug & Play Sound System, and other stuff for games etc. The speakers are powered, but I added those. I don't know what speakers were with the system previously. (I hate not knowing what I'm doing...and I REALLY appreciate the help you're giving me!!)

Well that is what we are here for. OK so the speakers do have there own power source. So I still think it is a driver problem.

Under Multim, edia, playback you indicated that the entry was: Sound System Playback

You sound card is a Opti86C931 Audio Card so under Playback it should of said somethine with OPTI in it, check to see if it can be changed from Sound System Playback to another one with the word OPTI in it.

I have downloaded the file for you and you can get it here:

OPTI

It is a ZIP file, however will not fit on a floppy unless yopu split it up. Within the ZIP file is about 20 files and once unzipped you need to double click on SETUP to install the drivers.

If you have a CD Burner you can unzip and burn to a cd then use the cd on the "95" computer to install.

Unfortunately......it didn't work. The program says it loses extra data in copying....it said it wouldn't affect the contents of the files....but it must have, because nothing works. On my XP, I can read the copied cd, but it won't open any files; the old computer won't even read the cd. Just lovely. Any other suggestions for me? Thanks again!

Hi
Right click on my computer select properties, then make your way to device manager
Any thing with a Question mark (?) or an exclamation mark (!) there?
