recording sound problem

Hey I was wondering if you guys could help me with a problem.
My sound works fine, I can play music etc, but when I try to record sound using my mic, nothing works. My brother has the exact same comp, and his works fine. My soundcard is Soundmax.
So is there any suggestions on how I can fix this problem so I can record sound?
Thanks alot.

EDIT: My microphone is properly plugged in, it doesnt need batteries and i think the problem may be the driver, but I don't know.

Hi boonghead welcome to CyberTechHelp.

Beside your clock (in the System Tray) is a speaker icon, two-click it and uncheck the mute box on microphone.

What make/model is that monitor?

Have you tried your brother's mic in your monitor?

My monitor says "CM 521M" , but I am not very good with computers. My brother does not have a mic, but he's computer can also record by speaking into the montior speakers, and I tried that but it doesn't work.
bty, I really appreciate your help.

Two-click your sound icon beside the clock

In it's menu
Options
Properties
Mixer device: can you select to change that with the popdown menu?

Sound Recorder

Press the record button and talk with your mouth very near the microphone, does the line wiggle when you talk?

Nope not a wiggle at all. My brother's computer has that though.

On your monitor is a button OSD (settings directly on the monitor). Look for a microphone setting.
