Hello to all who reads this:

Im having some font issues. I have windows ME... I had XP.. didnt work well with some hardware so I switched back to installing Windows ME... all is great, except for the fact in some apps such as Windows Media Player... all the buttons on the left with the font turns up as squares.. as if it cant read a font or something is missing in the system for some reason. And this shows up in severalplaces such as AIM, when I leave my away message on... the note that says "you got a message by 'so &so'.. shows up as squares. I believe it may be something within the system trying to read a certain font. I compared all my fonts to another ME puter.. all my fonts are there. but maybe 1 or 2 in particular are not showing up correctly!

ANY help or suggestions is appreciated!! Please email your help to me: Allie1138@aol.com

Thanks LOTS.. hope to hear from anyone SOON :)

Hi Allie1138 - welcome to CTH. You may have a corrupted MARLETT.TTF. Try restoring a good copy from your WinME CD. Go to Start > Run and type msconfig then use the 'Extract File' button to put a copy into C:\windows.

Now boot to a command prompt with your WinMe startup floppy (if you dont have one you can make one in Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > Startup Disk) and type the following commands, pressing enter after each command:

ATTRIB -H C:\WINDOWS\FONTS\MARLETT.TTF
COPY C:\WINDOWS\MARLETT.TTF C:\WINDOWS\FONTS\
ATTRIB +H C:\WINDOWS\FONTS\MARLETT.TTF

See if that helps.

I have exactly the same problem with fonts in Media Player and other applications, the one Home Networking Wizard, same rectangles instead of fonts. I tried the fix for marlett.ttf but it is still the same. Any ideas

Hi bobjohnston - welcome to CTH. You could try deleting your ttfCache (no extension) file in C:\Windows. After deleting it, reboot and the file will be recreated.

If you are still having problems, you could try TweakUI. It has a “Repair Fonts” option which will also fix the Fonts folder if there is a problem with it. You can download it from here (http://www.cybertechhelp.com/html/downloads/download.php/id/18).

Thanks for your quick response. I'm afraid neither deleting the ttfCache file or TweakUI solved the problem. Is there any chance that this could be a display driver problem?

Hi again bobjohnston - if it happens immediately upon windows loading, there is every chance that it could be caused by a problem with your video card drivers. Check the manufacturers website for an update.
