On my husbands computer we currently have outlook express, its Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, SP1. My husband would like to switch to Microsoft Outlook but I do not have that option on my computer to download it. How can I get this computer of his changed from outlook express to Microsoft outlook without messing everything up. Should I go out and buy Microsoft Outlook and is that an option, because I believe it comes with Microsoft Office if I am not mistaking. Can anyone please help me. Thanks for your time.

I believe it comes with Microsoft Office
Hi Mskitty welcome to CyberTechHelp.
You are correct, Outlook comes with Office. Make sure you read the Office package you
purchase to ensure Outlook is in the list of programs on the CD. There are a few versions
of Office and each one will have a different list of programs included.

its Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, SP1.
Your going to need to update Windows XP, your missing a lot of updates especially SP2 (Service Pack 2).

Thanks for the quick response Spider. Okay, I checked I don't have the microsoft office. Some one else loaded the stuff on this computer for us. So I guess I have to go purchase that. Also, on the SP2 the last time I tried to upgrade the computer with that it messed something up, can't remember what it was, and now I am afraid to do it again. Should I try it again, and then if I have a problem contact you?

I remembered what it was. I could not get on the internet after I loaded SP2, so should I try to load it again. Please let me know, and as always thanks for taking the time to help me out.

In my signature below is Panda and ewido, scan at both of those places and save the
log files and post them here please.
Infected computers (spyware and virii) can have problems with Windows Update. SP2 is not
a choice option, it's a mandatory update.
Another thing about Outlook, it's pretty much the same as Outlook Express. What does your
husband want Outlook for compared to Outlook Express?

Okay, so you want me to run those scans before I try to load SP2? My husband likes the fact that you can have an address book in there. He wants to keep track of his customers, since he has a small business. Also, while he is typing a letter in microsoft word, he can click on envelopes and labels it will create an envelope for him already addressed to the person that the letter is addressed to. I can't seem to get that to work with Outlook Express, also he likes that fact that you can send faxes directly from this e-mail program.

My husband really wants a program that he can keep addresses in, and from there he would like to create envelopes from that program. Is there some other program that we should purchase that does this?

Yes, those are viable reasons to upgrade to Outlook.

Now would be a fine time to DL/install Service Pack 2.
Spider
October 10th, 2005, 08:04 AM
zipulrich is correct but we can tidy up a bit and do some double checking to be sure.
Reboot to Safe Mode with Networking
(press F8 key at one second intervals when computer is starting and select Safe Mode with Networking)
Delete these...
C:\myPcsearch.exe
C:\old c drive (E)\WINDOWS\INF\TWAINTEC.INF
C:\old c drive (E)\WINDOWS\mwsvm.bin
C:\old c drive (E)\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\iexplore.exe
C:\old c drive (E)\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\keyword.exe_
C:\old c drive (E)\WINDOWS\TEMP\alchem.inf
C:\old c drive (E)\WINDOWS\TEMP\alchem.ini
C:\old c drive (E)\WINDOWS\TEMP\RemE323.exe
Stay in Safe Mode and scan at ewido and this time scan at Housecall (in my signature)
If either of those scanners indicate anything save the logs and post them here.
Reboot normal and scan at Panda. If Panda clears you then download CCleaner (http://www.cybertechhelp.com/download/file/ccleaner)
and run that to clean out temp files.
When that's done reboot and go for the SP2 update.

Okay, I went in and deleted the files you told me to delete according to the list, but I could not find c:\old c drive (E)\Windows\SYSTEM\iexplore.exe. I found the rest of the ones listed I went into the old c drive and deleted them out and put them into the recycle. Also, once I am in safe mode I can't get into the internet to do the scans that you told me to do.
Mskitty
October 10th, 2005, 02:04 PM
Should I just do the scans in regular mode? Thanks.

yes, I chose safe mode with networking, and it would not let me go online.

Run WinSock XP Fix (http://www.cybertechhelp.com/download/file/winsock-xp-fix) in normal mode and then try booting to Safe Mode with Networking.
Also in normal mode
Start
Run...
type notepad "c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts" hit enter
copy and paste that here please.

okay, here is the items from notepad. I will try to get into safe mode with networking now. Thank you.
his is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host
127.0.0.1 localhost

i tried to get online again under safe mode with networking. It had page can't be displayed. So I then thought I could set up a new connection, I wanted to set if up manually, the only iption I could pick was using a broadband connection that is always on. I don't have high speed cable isn't that what broadband is??

I did run the winsock fx in normal mode, and should I just go ahead and download sp2 anyway?? It looks like the stuff I copied on the notepad does not really say anything, but that is what printed out after I clicked on winsock xp fix that you had in your e-mail. Another question should I open up the winsock xp.exe fix and then click to run it, or did it already run? I am not too familiar with this stuff.

Yes.
You can't do dialup in Safe Mode, that's why you can't connect...that is normal.

What you can do is get on a computer *with* high speed and a CD writer (burner). You can download
the Windows XP SP2 full file (WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe) 266MB (http://download.microsoft.com/download/1/6/5/165b076b-aaa9-443d-84f0-73cf11fdcdf8/WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe) and "burn" it to a CD. That CD you
can take to your computer and run it.

well I tried to download the sp2 on to my husbands computer, and it took a long time. I had to stop the download then resume because we only have one phone line. Okay I made it part the way through the sp2 when it gave me a error code of 797, and it was telling me I had no modem. So i went to help and support and checked my modem and it said it was working fine. So the computer cut out from me being online because of not detecting the modem and I decided to just remove sp 2 altogether because it made me mad because I could not get back online to ask you all what to do next. So now sp2 is off my husbands computer and everything was fine, once I took it off, it then detected the modem, and got me through to the internet. So what should i do now, try it again. I did not get it burned onto a cd, although i went out and bought a cd burner, but I do not have high speed internet, so it would probaby take as much time as it did just to download it? Please let me know the next steps. Thank You.

Good Morning to you all, I hope everyone had a great thanksgiving. I finally installed sp 2 after several times trying to install it. So its on my husbands computer. Now, I have the error code 633 and I can't get his computer into the internet. This is the problem I have every time. I unhooked norton after the install. I opened device manager and went to the modem diagnostics and quered the modem, its show com 9 port and I think this is the problem, but I tried to change it to another port (1) and it said the port was in use. So I tried to create a new connection knowing this would not work either, and it didn't so what should I do next. It tries to connect but has unable to establish connection on it. If I uninstall sp2 it goes back to working fine. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
