Question about networking XP and Win 2K

I'm trying to network a desktop on XP to a laptop with 2000. The reason for this is so I can share files and the cable internet connection. The desktop is going to act as the host and I was planning to use a compact USB fast ethernet adapter and a cross over cable to connect to the laptops ethernet card. I initialized the wizard on XP to help set up a home or office network, however once I have made the setup disk for the 2000 laptop and placed it in the drive it shows a message indicating the setup disk doesn't work for Win 2000.
