Yesterday evening, my computer gave up the ghost, and presented me with the following error message:

xxxSTOPxxx 0X0000007B (0X81894CD0, 0XC0000032, 0X00000000, 0X00000000) INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE.

If this is the first time you’ve seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check you hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK/F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

Refer to your Getting Started manual for more information on troubleshooting Stop errors.

We tried booting from disk, from command, from safe mode, it won’t let us do anything :(

Earlier in the day, I removed a virus from the computer (I think it was called Java Open Stream, or something like that). I re-ran the virus checker after removing it, and it found no other problems.

12 hours later, I was using the computer, and plugged in a jack to the sound card. A couple of minutes later, the screen corrupted and the computer froze completely. On rebooting, the screen displayed nothing, so I assumed that maybe the graphics card had blown. However, I decided to give it one last shot, and turned off the computer, disconnected it from the power for a couple of minutes. On rebooting, the screen sprung to life, and the computer started booting. It then stopped with the Blue Screen of Death and the error message above.

I’m not sure how to proceed from here – do I have a virus, or is there something wrong with the hardware?

So just to be clear you can't boot into safe mode and you can't boot from the windows install cd? Can you at least boot into the BIOS at all? If you can get into the BIOS check and make sure the first boot device is the cd drive then pop in your install cd and save/exit the BIOS. This should boot the cd and at some point you may get the "press any key to boot from cd...." press a key and see if it will boot.

INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE

Sounds like the mbr or boot.ini might be wacked out or your hard drive is not getting read. If you can boot from the install cd go to the recovery cosole and try a chkdsk /R then exit and try to boot without the cd in. If that doest fix things then boot from the cd again use the RC again and this time try fixmbr then exit and boot without the cd. You could also try fixboot but if none of that works or you can't get it to boot from cd post back.

We have tried to boot from CD, but it just goes to the BSoD as well.

I'm at work at the moment, so can't try... would it be possible for my wife, who's at home with teh computer, to speak to you over the phone so you can explain? I'm a complete novice at this sort of thing, and am lost already! :dizzy:

were you ever able to resolve this? i'm dealing with exactly the same thing. i can't boot from the install and i can't boot from the boot disk, and i cannot get to the c prompt to run CHKDSK /f.

i'm thinking the hard drive is probably hosed, but i thought i'd check back in and see if there were any more suggestions.

thanks.
