Hello
I'm completely useless with computers so this question may seem laughable.
I have a bush dvd/video recorder, the problem there are sometimes parts of programs I don't want often such as ads for instance. Unfortunately my dvd recorder can't edit things out, so my question was is it possible to edit DVD-RWs and DVD-R disks on your computer. If so can someone give me a step by step guide to how you do it??
I also want to know.
1. Can you edit DVD-Rs
2. If you edit an hour long program and chop it down to say... ten minutes. Will the rest of the dvd automatically budge up so there is extra recording time again (hope that makes sense  ).
If anyone can give me a guide please post or pm me. ;)

No, DVD-R disks can't be edited the way you're talking about. They're sort of an "all or nothing" deal.
The way to edit something on a DVD is to copy its contents to the harddrive, do all the editing there, then burn the edited file back to DVD.
Keep in mind you need a fairly powerful computer with plenty of RAM to edit video without getting totally frustrated over the time it takes for the video to be processed.

Right, my only problem is I don't really know how to copy all the contents to the harddrive, or how to edit it.
Also do all computers have RAM and what does the video being processed mean ??
If copied a dvd full of say two hours of programs onto my harddrive and then copied the contents on to a DVD-R, then would that work.
Sorry about all the questions, if anyone can help me in a bit more detail with editing and copying contents then please post.

I would suggest that "ripping" DVDs and editing them and reburning them is perhaps a few to
many jumps ahead in learning video editing. You've chosen the most difficult thing to do with
videos and computers.
Perhaps getting use to editing videos first and getting use to video editing and sharpening your
skills in there before moving on to more complex things like ripping and compressing DVDs.
Video manipulation alone is pretty complex. Codecs, compression techniques, audio within video,
video format types, and a few other intricacies of video manipulation will keep you busy for a long
time learning how to successfully create a video of your own. Once your comfortable with some of
those aspects then move to learning how to rip a DVD.
Cart before the horse if you will when jumping straight to DVD ripping and editing.

If you're willing to pay for the education, your local technical college (whatever it's called in your area, we call it TAFE here in Aus) will teach courses in digital video and audio, probably with 'Multimedia' somwhere in the title. If you want to learn off of tutorials, books, etc, just keep in mind that this is a whole educational course of stuff to learn, and it just begins with the topics Spider mentioned.
