old BSR 486
I saw an earlier post about problems with an old 486 computor. I have one that I have been using mostly for the DOS database Nutshell. This morning while booting I got the message:
on board parity error addr (hex) = (0000:000A) system halted I get the same address everytime I boot. I can interupt and go into setup, but I don't know what to do there. Could this also be a battery problem? If not what can I do? |

Welcome to CTH
Parity errors are memory related. The most common cause of parity errors when first booting up the PC are incorrect configuration or using the wrong type of memory. It is unusual for an actual memory failure, of the type that parity checks for (meaning, you wrote one value into memory and read back another value with a bit changed) to be encountered at the start of booting, although it is possible. You do need to get into SETUP Once in setup find a menu item that speaks to parity checking and make sure it is disabled. If it is enabled accidentally, parity errors will result. In setup you probably will not have a mouse, so use the arrow keys to navigate between menu items and probably the enter key to highlight a item and possiblke the page up/page down to change it. The bottom of the screen should tell you how. Once the change is made find where you can SAVE & EXIT. If this is not the case post back as it could be a bad memory module.
