bad direct sound driver

Have had no sound except for a couple of e-cards for a while. Again while checking to see if the mute was on somewhere I got a message that I have a bad direct sound driver, does that mean I need a new sound card or is it something I can fix online. Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give me.

Howdy:

Have you tried re-installing the drivers for your soundcard??
