IE6 browsing question
I use IE6 as my browser. Can anybody explain how come when I try to clear my history, via the Tools>Internet Options>Clear History button, it does not always work. I can hit the button, close my browser, then re-check and the history is still there. Other times (using the same exact settings) the history is gone?
Not big deal, but I am wondering why this happens. Thanks

You could try just deleting it from: C:\Windows\History.
(Or if you use WinXP: C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Local Settings\History) If you ARE using Windows XP then to find the Local Settings folder you will need to go to the Folder Options in Control Panel and click the "view" tab. Then just select the "Show Hidden Files and Folders". It might just be a bug on IE's behalf.

Another thing I just noticed is that I never used to get confirmation box asking me if I was sure I wanted to clear the history from the recently visited web sites. In fact I don't recall ever getting one. I just tried to clear the history, and the box came up asking for confirmation. Everything seems ok (for now).
The only thing I have changed is my firewall. Zone Alarm to Outpost. I wouldn't think that should matter, but who knows.

Spoke too soon.
It's not clearing it, again. I guess what I am looking for is, perhaps, an answering as to how to correct the problem, not necessarily a way to go around it. I do get the confirmation box, however after I instruct the computer to clear the history, it acts like it is but when I check, nothing is gone. Thanks. One more thing. Also, there are times (such as now) when I am able to clear the history and continue to browse. When I re-check the history after a while it is still empty. Not one item in there. If I install IE6 over itself, will it do any type of repair ? I have WinXP, and I know it's a protected file, which cannot (almost) be uninstalled.

Are you trying to clear the history while you are connected?
If you are try doing it while you are offline. I might work.

Lately I've been trying when it's open. In the past I tried both. Again, it does clear about 70% of the time. Also, I have my security settings to clear temp internet files when the browser is closed, which does not always work either. I am, however, able to do it, via Norton clean sweep.
After reading the various forums I will have to say; if this is the worse of my problems I will be one happy dude! One thing I should ad that I never mentioned earlier. I have a Dell Dimension 4300. This is my second Dell Dimension tower which is loaded exactly as the first one. It was a warranty replacement. I was having the same problem with the first one as well, whatever than means. Perhaps some conflict with something Dell preinstalls. Perhaps it's haunted. Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Perhaps I have an (unconfirmed) reason as to why this is occurring, but no resolution. I totally forgot to mention that I have the Google Tool Bar add-on (which attaches to IE6). Some of my reading suggest this could be the cause, so I thought I would post it in case others might be experiencing the same problem.
If I can confirm this, I will let you know. Thanks to all who took the time to help.

Has this only started recently? I know Google rolled out an updated toolbar in the last couple of weeks due to some security issues that were pointed out.

It has been occurring for as long as I can recall, well before the new release of the Google tool bar. I am currently using the newer version, I think (1.1.60)
This is something I came across which supports my belief that it could be due to Google, however, it is not confirmed and I am too lazy to uninstall Goolge to see if I am correct. But this is it: SYMPTOMS: After you click Clear History on the General tab of Internet Options, Web pages that you visited today may not be removed from your history. CAUSE This problem may occur if another process has the history locked when you click Clear History. http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;Q323687
