Is it a hub or a router? What versions of windows are you using? What software firewalls do you have running? In many cases a firewall is the problem.
Can you see your father's computer in the network neighborhood?

Try having the 'Computer Browser' service running on just 2 machines. Check the firewall settings on your fathers machine and make sure they allow local access for file sharing. Make sure the XP firewall is not running.

XP home or XP pro? Are all machines using simple file sharing, if XP pro?

Try disabling the firewall on the father's pc. You may want to disconnect the Internet during this time.

BTW - the 1800hg is a wireless router.

What have you tried?

Try disabling the firewall on the father's pc. You may want to disconnect the Internet during this time. Have you run with the firewall off?XP home or XP pro? Are all machines using simple file sharing, if XP pro?

Are the PC's in the same workgroup?

Try with the firewall on, but make sure the IP Addresses or Range are allowed.

Try Simple File Sharing from folder options.
Have you enabled File and Printer sharing?

You can use IPCONFIG from a Command Prompt, or you can view the Properties of the Network Adaptor or, if using DHCP from a router, you can log into the Router config and look at the client table.

Are you sharing the whole drive? If so try sharing just a folder?

And once more for good measure.... ARE YOU USING XP HOME OR XP PRO?
