Can someone please tell me when and why the MFT was created?
Thanks!

We aren't a "get your homework done by others for free" site.
Read this info on FAT from Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File_Allocation_Tables).

Sorry to have bothered you. I am not a "kid". I am a 50 + grandmother going to college and cannot find the answer to my question. It was purely innocent and I was NOT asking for some free answer to my homework. I did use the search method for 3 days and cannot find the answer so I when I ran across this web site, I thought that maybe someone could or would help me. Again, I am sorry to have bothered anyone.

Well, put that way....relax. No-one here meant any harm ('least I didn't, anyway). You need to understand, often we get homework questions, and we both realize nothing is learned by having someone else answer rather than doing your own research.

Seeing that's not your case, I hope the link I gave helps you out some. And please, hang around. You may learn more than you even want to know. :)

I guess that I do realize now that you must get tons of homework questions. I didn't think about it when I posted. Thank you for the link. I do have one more question. Are the FAT and the MFT one and the same. All this technical stuff is very confusing to me, but I am determined to get throught it and figure it out.
Thanks again for your help.

FAT and MFT are not the same thing no. FAT is an older file system used by Windows, whereas MFT is part of a file system. NTFS uses a MFT as part of its file system. The first file on an NTFS volume is the MFT. For more info on NTFS/FAT/MFT check out this link...
