I am using a new computer to me that used to be part of a large network and is now just a single PC. I disabled the dhcp and my problem went away but i could no longer acess the internet. Is there a fix. Here are a couple of event logs that might shed some light. i am using windows 2000 profesional.

Ive been running everest and it seems that every time my CPU maxes out my lease changes and it only gives me ten minutes until it expires.

As a work around you could satic address the computer. Give it static ip,dns, and gateway addresses. Of course if for some reason the ip of your isp's dns changes or that dns server goes down for some reason then you are outta luck. If you don't have a windows 2k disk to reinstall then you might get away with uninstalling and reinstalling the network stack, but thats not a 100% fix either. Also this is Win2k are you patched with all the service packs?

Because spyware scanning, virus scanning, then repairing holes after that will still leave some problems
in areas of Windows and it also takes time to do that. If Windows *.dll files were replaced with older
versions then checking every version number of every *.dll would take time.

Even after all that you may have to run a repair install and that will take an hour or so to run and after that
you have to go to Windows update and probably spend the next 4 hours updating Windows again. Even
after the repair install things may still not be right with your connection setup.

So to avoid all that time, back up and do a partition delete install. Partition delete install takes about an hour
and then anywhere from 2-4 hours updating Windows at Windows Update (depending on your connection speed)
If your on dial-up it's going to take days to update Windows.

All this because I'm assuming your TCP Stack (Windows connection configurations and files) has been exploited.
TCP Stack either works or it doesn't and since your online yours is working so repairing it is futile. Most likely
some "key" Windows *.dll files have been overwritten (virus possibly) and there is no way to go through them all
to check versions according to what Windows updated versions should be.

If your computer was on the domain of old company, it still may try to look for the dhcp server that it used to get addresses from. If it is not already removed from the domain, try to do so....that may help you

Was the computer a server? If it is running Wondows 200 server you should remove the DHCP and AD servercies using the control panel? just a thought
