catch-22

I came upon this problem and do need some help. I have a computer-laptop, OS
WinXP, it times out when browsing, I believe the problem is with ICS, it used to be on a network, the 'host' is gone, an have been unable to change the settings, as that needed to be done on the host. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I am some what a novice at this sort of thing.

Welcome

Did you disable the ICS?
Look in the Network Connections folder to see what adaptors are listed and view their properties to see if they are using ICS.

unable to disable ICS because that needed to be done on the 'host' machine, which is now gone as PER:
LOCAL AREA CONNECTION ON LINUX IGD
The Internet Connection Sharing Computer is not configured to let network users control or disable the Shared Internet Connection.

This setting can be changed in the ADVANCED PROPERTIES of the Shared Connection on the Internet Connection Sharing computer.

As I stated above that machine is unavailable, it got fried during a storm.

You you want the default settings then you can remove the adaptor and let Windows reinstall it with the basic settings.

will try it, also is there anything else that could be causing the browsers to hang-up, time-out, etc?

Does it connect at all?
First you need to get it connected to the net, then you can troubleshoot any other connection problems.

Question catch-22

Well, tried your suggestion, sad to report , things are the same. I can turn on the computer , in this case, a laptop(Inspiron 5160), and it will run just fine for about 15-20 minutes, I can access the Web,etc., without a hitch. After that; well it is totally opposite, unable to access the internet and only receive error messages from Firefox saying 'operation timed out while trying to contact ...', and IE Explorer messages ' This page unable to display' ' cannot find server' .
I am completely lost I don't have the slightest clue why it would be acting that way. Have run spyware, virus checks and all have come up clean. I do thank you for your time and consideration in this matter.
