I have an ThinkPad T21. It has an integrated nic. It runs at work on a Novell network with a static IP address. When on the road, I use an internet dialer to connect to the internet, then VPN to connect to our network. Most of our other laptops with integrated nics have a setting that can be set to make the nic adaptive, so it doesn't hold the IP settings when the card is not in use. This one does not have this setting. The others have pcmcia cards which can be popped out. In order to use the VPN, I have to go into the network settings and set it to obtain an ip address automatically, then resetting it when I come back into the office. And I don't really want to set a hardware profile.
I tried disabling nic and installing a 3COM type iii nic. The card drivers or the card itself must not integrate well with the pc and now it is starting in safe mode. I had to remove it.
The bottom line is...I would like to be able to plug my network cable in at work and connect to the network; when away, just plug the phone line in to connect to the network through software without having to make a lot of software changes. Is there any way to do this?
Thanks, in advance, for your help!
