Error message

I have and IBM thinkpad, when I turn on my computer everything looks normal but this message comes up " Cannot find a device file that may be needed to run windows or a windows application. The windows registry or SYStEM.INI file refers to this device file, but the device no longer exists." and then it comes to the screen where it says 1.Normal 2. Logged (/BOOTLOG.TXT) etc. but when you go to Normal it goes and the _ thing flashes and thats all it does and if you do Safemode it says and error has occured and you have to restart the PC. I just dont know what to do and cant get my lap top to work. Could you please help me? My e-mail is Email removed by mod: Murray thanks alot.

Try this boot to the MS/DOS command and at the prompt type this scanreg /fix (notice the space)
