Weird start up

Every once in a while, when I boot up, I can hear the fans running, but I don't get all the usual sounds and when I turn the monitor on the light just flashes on and off. Most of the time start up is ok, so what's happening? All the power options in the control panel are turned off. Any ideas? Thanks. Turnstone

Are you saying that all you hear is the fans running and no Hard drive sounds?

When it does this does Windows still boot fine?

If so then this is a weird one.

Kinda of hard to tell exactly what you are saying the PC is doing.

Is your time correct? If not then most likely your Cmos Battery on the mother board needs replaced.

As for the monitor not coming on. That sounds like either the Video card isn't getting loaded or the Memory isn't loading correctly. Which could be caused by a dieing battery also.

Hi. Thanks for replying, Dodge. Yes, all I hear is the fans running and none of the usual beeps etc of the hard drive. I don't know if windows is booting or not because the monitor stays black so I can't see what's happening. The time is fine, except for one day that it was stuck at one particular time for several hours. When I rebooted the time was ok again. The computer is only a year old...could it need a new battery already? Isn't it odd that this only happens occasionally and the rest of the time everything is fine? Thanks for your help.
