Right-click on the Network Neighborhood icon and select Properties.

On the Configuration tab, select Windows Logon in the Primary Network Logon box.

When Windows prompts you to restart your computer, click No.

Click the Start button, point to Settings, then select Control Panel
Double-click the Passwords icon
On the Change Passwords tab, click the Change Windows Password button, click OK, then set a blank password.

i dont think you understand my problem, let me explain: I DONT WANT THE PASSWORD SCREEN POPPING UP AT ALL. i need to know how to take it of my computer and keep it from popping up. it didnt start popping up until i got broadband internet service. the solution that you gave me in your reply only allows me to establish a new password or leave the password "blank", i dont want this. i want the pass word screen removed from my computer!!!!

scoward,

Theoran does understand your question. Setting the password to blank should remove the prompt entirely...

I used this procedure when I went from dial-up to cable, and it worked for me. ;)

When the password prompt comes up, and you already have a "blank" password set....are you sure you are hitting OK and not "cancel". Hitting cancel will make the prompt return on the next boot.

Also...this method may not work if you have multiple user identities.

BTW...scoward....I am detecting a certain impatience in your posts. There is no reason to shout (using CAPS, and "no you don't"). We are all volunteers here, and do the best we can. My apologies if my characterization of your posts is incorrect.

hi

my cable connection uses a NIC, so it is a LAN connection.

I am a single user, and no-one else is using my machine.
I also don't like it when the machine is waiting for me to hit that button.
I actually use tweakui to do the logon for me during boot.

User profiles....

Go into your control panel and open up the passwords properties (keys icon). When the properties box opens, click the "user profiles" tab. Make sure the "All users of this computer use the same preferences and desktop settings." is selected. If it isn't...and you are the only user...select it. This function disables user profiles.

Then check these two sites for more details.

..and a slightly different procedure here:

They both apply to windowsME as well as 98.
