hi there,
i'm having problem with 2 pc's that were networked and were working fine talking to each other. i had a crash on the server (gateway pc) and had to re-install win-98 and all. now, the lap top (client) can't see the server. i checked ipconfig on both. the laptop is ok (198.169.......) but the server (desktop) is showing something totally wacky (054.69.140......). i checked the network on control panel. it hase "client for m-s networks", "dial-up networking", and tcp-ip for each one of them. the server computer name used to be A5W4Z1 before the crash, but i was prompted to change it during installation of win-98 and changed it to "desktop01". i changed it back, still no luck. what should the settings be on those 2 items and their tcp-ip please?

You could make your server TCP/IP address xxx.xxx.xxx the same as ur client (or vice versa) and make the fourth as 1 for server, 2 for client. So you get 200.0.0.1 for server and 200.0.0.2 for client with submask of 255.255.255.0. I know that this works for between networked computers but I don't know if it'll work for servers.

Also, you might need to check the gateway of the two computers so that they are the same. Don't know if its necessary in your case but I have to use it on mine to make the connection work.

The most likely way of doing would be the network wizard. Don't know if your Win98 has it but see if you can find the wizard to make a disk for the connection.

How are the machines networked (through a router, using a crossover cable,...)? I am guessing you are using a router and it is acting as the DHCP server. Check your TCP/IP settings on the problem machine and make sure it is set to obtain its IP address and DNS server address automatically.

thanks guys,
the ip address and dns address are both set to "obtain automatic". but my problem is that the server machine does not get the standard network ip address like 192.168.1.0 it get some wacky address like 049.054.10.063.
the computers are wired with cross over cable via belkin ethernet 10/100 card. i have used ipconfig on both server and client. the client seems to be ok. but the server is totally wacked up numbers.
still struggling to connect the two.

Are you sharing the internet connection through the Server? If so have you set up ICS? If you weren't and aren't using ICS I don't know how you were obtaining your IP addresses.

Check the workgroup name is the same on both computers. It looks like you are using dial-up to connect to the internet? If you are try changing TCP/IP to static using : 192.168.0.1 255.255.255.0 and 192.168.0.2 255.255.255.0
Set the gateway on the client to the computer IP address of the server.
