Instead of redhat 9, you might want to get a more 'to-date' distro. If you want to stick with redhat, look into fedore core. If it doesn't matter to you, check out ubuntu, mandrake, and possibly even suse. This is just my opinion, though.

Since your harddrive is already partitioned the setup will be pretty simple, just make sure to install linux on the free space, and not overwrite your existing windows partition.

Specs aren't incredibly important. If it runs windows, then it will definitely run linux (as far as performance goes).

Ubuntu isn't necessarily better then Redhat 9 it is just more up to date (meaning it has newer versions of applications, patches, etc). In the linux world there isn't a 'best' distro, its all a matter of what suits you best. Ubuntu is based off of debian, just as fedora is based off of red hat, but that doesn't make one better then the other.

WIth the .iso file, you can't burn it to a cd normally and expect it to boot. You have to burn it as a cd image. What do you use to burn cd's?

You would burn the .iso file to a cd-r/cd-rw etc, but you would not burn it normally, you would have to burn it as a cd image. Such as:

You dont have to use Nero. There's a little application out there that hooks into XP's burnig software and adds a entry to your context menu [right click] on ISO files giving the option "Burn Image.."

Once written to CD you'll need to reboot and boot off of the CD. It may well boot on its own, but you may need to adjust your boot sequence in your system BIOS. Ask if you dont know how, or google.
