.........that refuses to die.

1.4Ghz P4, 120G hdd, WinMe, no virii/trojans, 128Mb, etc. Here's the deal - On normal shutdown, it stays off for a few minutes......then reboots. Been to power settings, changed so when it's off it's off. Gave the machine back this morning (I fixed other stuff), and all was good.

Lady called tonite to tell me it's started again.

By itself.

Any suggestions? Something in BIOS perhaps?

You might want to look in the MB manual to see what "Wake-On" options are available, then check the BIOS to see what's activated. You might also look in the manual for any jumper settings that cover's this Wake Up condition - Power management sometimes has some of these settings.

Common "Wake-On" devices / events are:
1. LAN / NIC
2. Keyboard - Hotkeys for on/off/standby etc.
3. Disk Activity - although this is usually set to stop the computer from going to sleep & not to wake it up.
4. Any USB devices? Parallel or Serial devices?
5. Telephony devices (modem)?

Thanks for the response!! Unfortunately, this is a Gateway. Lady's got no mobo manuals. I'll go over later today and snoop around in BIOS.

Here are a couple of other things to consider:

1. Intermitent short in the Front Panel Power Switch - just close enough to being a short that would "kick" the PS into thinking someone had pressed the switch.

2. The so-called "solid state relay" may be failing & the PS may be turning itself on. Unless the PS is really exotic it's not worth fixing & should just be replaced. This is an easy one to check with another PS.

At this point, I'd go with #2 and try a known-good PS. If this is a gateway, is it still under warranty?
