hi,
im going to be living in a shared accomodation where the wireless lan will be controled by one of my future room mates. Is there something I can do that will gurantee (well, atleast try! ) to protect my computer from the lan administrator, so that they do not have access to websites/information i shall be accessing? So rather than this being a question about how to protect my wireless LAN from intruders, I want to know how to keep my network admin from snooping around my workstation!thanks. |

The basics on protecting your PC from local intrusion is the same as protecting it on the internet.
#1: Run a firewall (In this case you need a software firewall like ZoneAlarm or Sygate) #2: Protect any shares you have. In your case you most likely don't want to share anything. #3: Set your PC's Administrator password. As far as the network admin seeing what sites you visit... That can't be prevented. How much they see depends on what they have set up and how much they know. If they are using a home class router, they won't see much except possibly the IP addresses and names of the websites. If they use something a bit more sophisticated they could capture all the traffic. Even then they could not see the information thatwas sent over a HTTPS connection.
