Ultra VNC

Hi guys,

I am trying to setup ultra VNC on our small office network to allow remote connection. Program has installed OK and I'm pretty sure that the firewall has been set right, but the 'server' icon on the tool bar seems to be displaying the internal IP rather than the external that would be needed for the 'veiwer' to sign in.

Anyone got any suggestions??

Do you have a Router?
If so you need to setup PortForwarding to the internal PC IP and the port defined for VNC

Degsy is spot on with his advice. Also when you want to access a computer over the internet you would enter its public ip not the internal private ip. If you have a domain setup you would just enter the domain name. The server icon in the task tray will always show the internal private ip thats fine no biggy.

Cheers guys,

we do have a router, and thats is what I thought I would have to do, problem is, is that our IT guy who installed the machines and router hasn't given me the password to access the settings, but he is supposed to coming out to sort it, I just wanted to be able to do it myself! I am pretty annoyed withhim as he charged us for the VNC software (including install & setup) and then I found out Ultra VNC is available free to download!! Grrrr!!

Don't suppose there is any way to bypass/find out the password? I assume I am entering the settings the right way, by typing our IP into the address bar?

Depending on the Router it may have a reset switch. If you don't already have access then this is not recommended as you don't know the current configuration. You could ruin the full network setup.

Cheers Degsy, I've now got the password, and the port forwarding is all set, so I just need to check it at home! Oh, its a conexant router.

On a similar note, with the port forwarding set to my machine, obviously I will be able to acces my own machine, but is there any way that VNC can be installed on other office machines so that each individual may remotly access from home, ie, does the port forwarding limit it to only access that machine?

You change the port in the VNC program install on the PC.

You may want to mirror the internal IP address.

e.g.
The default port for your VNC program is 5000

Your internal ip range is 192.168.1.110 - 192.168.1.120

You set the VNC port to 5110 for PC1, 5111 etc.
in the router forwarding you set port 5110 to goto ip address 192.168.1.110

So when ou enter the external ip you use the port to get to the PC you want
