I have been running a batch called cabrest.bat for years. (W98, SE, ME)
I make 14 registry backups and this app can bring one of many at any time.
Of late though this app fails to do right.
It gets to the point of asking what reg to restore but when I choose the corresponding letter, I get 'Can not run this program in dos'.
Duh. That's contrary to the app not being able to run in windows.
I d/l'd it again. Same thing.
Happened once before and I modified tha batch and had it running great.
While cleaning the other day, must have thrown my notes out.:(
Anyone running this batch file have any probs or suggestions?
Thanks.:michaelan

Your saying you're running XP. Were you running it with XP before?

I was fixing to run it but wasn't sure how to get it in the root directory and haven't got back to it. Maybe check this out and see if the settings are still the same. I see there's a download available that I didn't find before. I was going to add it manually. It was last updated in 2001.

To view and edit SCANREG.INI, simply click once on a blank spot on the Desktop Taskbar and press F3. Type SCANREG.INI in the Named: box, and type C:\WINDOWS in the Look in: box. Click Find Now and in a moment, when you see the file in the window simply double-click it to launch it in Notepad. The standard version of SCANREG.INI should read something like this:

;
; Scanreg.ini for making system backups.
;

;Registry backup is skipped altogether if this is set to 0
Backup=1

;Registry automatic optimization is skipped if this is set to 0
Optimize=1

ScanregVersion=0.0001
MaxBackupCopies=5 [We recommend changing this number to 14]

;Backup directory where the cabs are stored is
; <windir>\sysbckup by default. Value below overrides it.
; It must be a full path. ex. c:\tmp\backup
;
BackupDirectory=

; Additional system files to backup into cab as follows:
; Filenames are separated by ','
; dir code can be:
; 10 : windir (ex. c:\windows)
; 11 : system dir (ex. c:\windows\system)
; 30 : boot dir (ex. c:\)
; 31 : boot host dir (ex. c:\)
;
;Files=[dir code,]file1,file2,file3
;Files=[dir code,]file1,file2,file3

Prudent computing dictates that a back up copy of SCANREG.INI should be saved in C:\WINDOWS\SYSBCKUP before you begin your editing session. Once this is done, change the value for MaxBackupCopies= from 5 to 14. Save and close SCANREG.INI.

I'm sorry about that. I had been using someone's computer and he had XP. But now I am on 98 SE. That's why I posted in the 98 forum.
Again sorry for the confusion. I only knew it to run on 98 but maybe you are on to something else.
I'll change my specs right away.
Thanks,
Nick:michaelan

I got it installed and it's working super. Just one question. It says to move all odd rb files someplace else. Where do you move them to. I have one that says rbbd I think no number. The rest are 00-14.

Did you get yours to work?

The program should put them is sysbckup folder.
If you get an rbbad occasionally, just delete it.
When you system is running pretty good on some days, go to start/run/scanregw That will force a new reg for that day. I usually make about 3 to fall back on in case.
I still haven't fingered mine out yet. It worked and then it doesn't work.
I will remember the work around eventually.
It will save your butt.

Yes I like it cause it's up to date whereas the regular one seemed to skip days. It would sometimes be a week or more behind.

Now I'm curious why yours suddenly quit especially if you re-installed it. Do you have the latest one which was 2001?

Nick can you put the newest rb on a disk and save them to extract if need be?

Finally found it. While searching, I actually found an old post, by me, (go figure) explaining a difference between extract.exe file in windows and extract.exe file in windows\command. Two different versions from a W98? CD or W98? restore disk. Don't know why the difference, but deleting the one in windows and replacing it with the one in windows\command fixed the prob and it's back to working like a charm.
I love when a plan comes together.:michaelan
I am now a very happy camper.;)
You cannot propel yourself forward by patting yourself on the back. But in this case I patted myself about 2 feet.:rotflmao:
The Fix (http://www.cybertechhelp.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-78441.html)
I could have sworn it was longer than that ago. Those darn senior moments.

WTG you deserve a pat even if it was your own topic. Doncha hate it when you forget one of your own solutions.:laugh: Yeah those senior moments.:rotflmao:

So if mine quits working that's what I will need to do. Course I'll be forgot where to find the fix too. So how did you get that problem twice?

he'd done an SFC perhaps?

Nick Grana

I haven't a clue. This system was given to me and I just restored HP disks on it and it seemed cabrest.bat worked initially. But then it bombed.
When I did the original fix, another place, another time, another computer, it glitched the same. How on earth this file could change is beyond me.
And why 2 versions?
It works, so it ain't broke anymore and I'll leave well enough alone.:wave:
When I change all this to Windows 2K shortly, I'll cross that bridge then if necessary.:michaelan

I hear 2000 is pretty good, but I just hate upgrading when 98 is stable and I like it.

jt what is SFC?

I need to spend more time on the 98 box I see rusting away...

I thought one can find it when one runs msconfig in one of the dropdown menus after one goes advanced.

SFC itself is in XP and 2000

OOPs.
My memory is afflicted by age, I guess.

make that msinfo32
it is in the tools box in there.

It is described here
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/184075/

I will have to light up that 98 box, and see what is under advanced in msconfig.

jtdoom

Aha, it CAN be run from run...
sfc was there

in programs menu, you find it deep down in system tools...

run msinfo32 gets you to it so much faster, and has lots of tools on one place.

No, JT. Never restored those files from sfc.
They came on my system straight from the HP restore disk.
I figure I d/l'd something to install like BHODemon or some spyware stuff I use and it changed file in windows to older version. But it usually alerts you to that so still looking for answer but not too hard.:michaelan
