I have a compaq presario 7212, with Windows 95. I upgrade to Windows 98. Now no matter what I do I can't get the modem to work.

As far as I can figure the problem lies with the smbios settings, but I can't change them. F1 and F10 are no help.

Even external modem won't work. Have gotten as far as to having the computer recognize the darn thing but no dial tone.

Some Old computer's modems dont have support for winfows 98
For example, my old compaq presario 4102 had 95 on it, the modem worked, when i installed win98 on it the modem was not recognised or pickup as an other device

the external modem, may be damaged... or drivers arent correctly installed, the phone line from the phone jack to the modem bay be damaged, or you are missing some software, or some settings need to be configured

Do you have the CD for the modem or a disk for it with the drivers on it? If so go to the device manager and remove the modem. Reboot and it should find the modem so you can re-install the drivers. When upgrading you sometimes have to re-install the drivers also you might want to download the newest ones for your modem. To get to device manager right click on my computor icon/properties. Windows 98 does come with drivers but it might not have one for your modem so best to use the ones that came with it if you can.

I tried all the obvious things. But instead of wiping out Windows 95, and then putting in Windows 98, I put in Windows 95 and installed 98 over it.

Now the computer sort of recognizes the modem. At least it gives me a series of AT commands which it never did before. Although the very last AT commands read error.

But now I know for such what my modem is (it does not indicate much of anything which I looked at the modem itself), so now I am hopeful I can reinstall the drivers.

When I first changed to 98 I used the upgrade and did the same thing installed over 95 so I could revert back to 95 since I had so much 95 stuff I wanted to keep. Seems though the modem and video will give you trouble where you have to re-install the drivers. Anyway what I suggested I had to do and then the modem worked fine.

Hi Lisa. Taka a look at the downloads section here at CTH and download Everest - it will identify any hardware in the system even if Windows can't. Report back what it tells you about the modem and we'll be able to help further.
